Guest Speaker's Greetings Mr. Kazuhiro Suda Director General, Telecommunications Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications <Greetings Abstract> In Japan, the practical application and dissemination of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) such as car navigation and ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) is advancing at a remarkable pace. In the new IT (Information Technology) reform strategy decided this January (2006), the government announced that it will take a progressive approach to realize the practical application of the Safe Driving Support System using ITS technologies. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication is also working hard to realize a ubiquitous network society as one of its objectives. In a ubiquitous network society, everybody can communicate whenever, wherever and with whomever they wish. Just as it is possible to communicate with anyone using mobile telephones, intelligent home appliances are connected, and there is now a focus on communications with vehicles. We have been working on the realization of wireless broadband using a radio wave technology required for a ubiquitous network society that utilizes ITS. The first example of efforts related to the progression of ITS is the research and development of ubiquitous ITS technologies such as road-to-vehicle and inter-vehicle communications technologies that can quickly and accurately provide information to advise drivers of possible dangers. Another example is the investigation of measures to develop a VICS (Vehicle Information Communication System) together with the diffusion of terrestrial digital broadcasting. A third example is the standardization activities of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), which target the worldwide dissemination of DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) technology. The aim of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is to contribute to the realization of a society where ITS technologies involving information, communications and radio waves are utilized to make driving safe and comfortable. In the area of safe driving support, the Ministry is actively promoting a large-scale demonstration in 2008 and nationwide installation of related systems in 2010. The continued support and cooperation of members attending the symposium are sincerely appreciated.
