Greetings from the Organizer Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda, Chairman, ITS Info-communications Forum <Greetings Summary> The info-communications field continues to make amazingly rapid progress towards the realization of a ubiquitous network society where one can easily obtain network access to contact anyone regardless of where they are or what time it is, and exchange all kinds of information. The basic elements needed for this type of society will themselves create a need for progress and expansion in new directions. Our forum was established in 1999 for the purpose of helping to promote the standardization and R&D of info-communications technologies that link people and automobiles and roads, and serve as the basic elements for developing ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems). Since that time, we have aggressively contributed to the creation of domestic and international standardization with the cooperation of concerned companies, governmental agencies and relevant organizations. Close collaboration between the government and private sectors has yielded an excellent outcome for the approval of various domestic standards. Additionally, international standards for DRSC (Dedicated Short Range Communications) were proposed to and accepted by the ITU and ISO. One success stemming from our efforts is the commercialization of ITS, as shown by the steady spread of info-communications equipment and systems, including the accumulated sales of 18 million car navigation systems, 12 million units of VICS (Vehicle Information Communication Systems), and 7 million on-board ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) units. Based on the recommendation of the Smartway Project Advisory Committee, a joint industry-government research project was established in February of this year. The project theme of which is next-generation DSRC services. Additionally, demonstrations of other developments in the ITS field have been being conducted since March of this year at the EXPO 2005 AICHI JAPAN. So you might say that ITS is now heading toward its second stage in our push to help it reach the practical-use level. This symposium is being held not only for ITS experts. It is for specialists from every field to discuss ITS from various viewpoints by exploring new business directions. While reflecting these viewpoints, we hope to surge to a new level of energy and activities that will lead to the earlier expansion of ITS info-communications systems. To reach this level, we request the support and cooperation of those attending here today.
